Deepening reforms in the cultural system and strengthening the Party's leadership of the culture sector will be the major subject for the Sixth Plenary Session of the 17th Central Committee of the CPC, according to a meeting held by the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Monday.

Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, presided over the meeting, which is a major gathering of Party leaders prior to the Session to be convened in the nation's capital from October 15 to 18.

The meeting stressed that culture is becoming a significant factor in boosting the nation's comprehensive power, and enriching spiritual and cultural life has become a major wish for citizens.

In a rare move, the Party has chosen to specifically discuss the culture issue in a plenary meeting since 1966.

Zhang Xixian, a professor with the Party School of the CPC Central Committee, told the China News Service that the "three mismatches" – the cultural level not matching the comprehensive national power, cultural development not matching economic growth and not meeting the expectations of the public would be studied in the session.

Li Changchun, a Political Bureau Standing Committee member of the CPC Central Committee, pointed out at a recent government conference that the worship of money, luxury lifestyles and extreme selfishness have grown among some people.

He said that the session would bring forward new requirements on thoughts and moral construction.

"Though the country has a high GDP, its cultural influence is still lagging internationally, " Zhang Yiwu, a director of the Cultural Resources Research Center at Peking University, told the Global Times.

"The disadvantage in cultural development will become a bottleneck in social transition," Zhang said.

"Stressing cultural creativity not only benefits economic development but also promotes people's sense of happiness," he added.
