Summary: The democratic socialism and the social democracy are forms of social reformism the time they emerged, with which Marx and Engels had made the serious criticism and struggled at the beginning of their political parties and their labor movement. The fiasco of the European revolution in the mid-19th century had proclaimed the bankruptcy of the democratic socialism and the social democracy. Bernstein doctrine is a hodgepodge of social reformism. Scientific socialism and the democratic socialism in terms of democratic views and socialist views are fundamentally opposite to each other. Is democratic socialism Marxism, or are Marx and Engels at their old age democratic socialists? These problems can not be argued with subjective assumptions, but the answer can only be figured out from the historical facts. Proceeding with the political thoughts in mid-19th century, this paper examines the maze of historical events and complex struggle over half a century of what Marx and Engels had experienced, so that their comment on the democratic socialism, social democracy and in later years their social reformist variant in the labor movement and political parties among workers can be unraveled.
